the north west bristol camera club skip to content home about brunnel200 contact us events/information resources ← older posts creating realistic cloud effect in photoshop posted on june 20, 2018 by after following the next tutorial, you will know how to create realistic clouds. photoshop has a filter you can use to create clouds, the cloud filter. this tool can be useful if you want to generate few fuzzy looking clouds. if you want to create clouds which look very realistic, you have to go deeper. you will still use the cloud filter in this tutorial, but only to create a cloud brush. step 1 in the first phase you will create the clouds brush that you will use to paint the clouds. create a new document: go to the file menu on top of the main photoshop window and select the new option. from the dialog box that will appear select 640 * 480 and click ok. step 2 you now need to set the foreground color to black and the background color to white by pressing the d key. now go to the main photoshop menu and select filter > render > clouds. select the lasso tool (which you will find in the tool bar) and make an egg-shaped selection. make sure that the areas you select with the lasso tool is not all grey, but also include both lighter and darker areas. the size of the selection should be around 1/3 of the document’s height. step 3 chose from the photoshop main menu select > feather . from the feather” dialog box chose a radius value of 10 and click ok to soften the edge of the area you are going to copy. step 4 copy your selection (ctrl+c) to the clipboard. next create a new layer (click on the create a new layer icon which you will see in the layers palette) and paste (ctrl+v) the content of your clipboard to the new layer. click on the eye icon which you will find in front of the layer to make the background layer invisible. step 5 select image > trim from the menu and maintain its default settings (the trim option removes all excessive areas that contain no pixels -100% transparent-).now click ok . step 6 you can adjust the brightness and the contrast of your new brush (select the brightness and contrast from the image > adjustments menu). name your new brush clouds original and click ok. step 7 now go to the tool bar, select the brush tool and open the brushes palette (click on the brushes palette tab). click the sector named brush tip shape and from there select the clouds brush you have created earlier. step 8 click on the sector named shape dynamics and make sure all settings are the same (you have look especially to the 100% values for size jitter and angle jitter). clicking on the sector named color dynamics and make sure all settings are the same (note the value 10% 10% for brightness jitter). step 9 disable all the other settings in the brush preset (scattering, texture, dual brush, etc). click with the mouse of the area named brush presets name your new brush clouds and click ok. step 10 select the brush named clouds original. click delete brush and click ok. the brush that you will use to paint the clouds is now ready. save it for later use (go to the menu and select edit > preset manager > preset type: brushes > save set > name your brush > click save. figure 9. step 11 now that you have created the brush, it is time to create the background on which you will later paint the clouds. open a new document and set its size to 800×600. double click on the foreground color (which you will find in the tool bar) and select a dark blue color (for example, enter the e 304971 value). step 12 double click on the background color in the tool bar and enter the 7e9cb4 value (it is a lighter blue) from the color picker window which will appear. step 13 next you have to use the gradient tool. select a linear gradient (you will find the linear gradient icon in the options bar) and use it to draw a gradient: hold down the shift key and move the mouse to the top of the document. step 14 while holding the left mouse button, move the cursor to the bottom of the document. release the left mouse button and the shift key (holding the shift key ensures that you will trace a straight line). step 15 select the brush tool.press the d key to reset your fore- and background color and press the x key to switch their color. select the background color and give it a light gray color (enter the f4f4f4 value). step 16 at this point you should create a new layer. before starting painting, make sure you have the clouds brush selected and that its size is set at 70 pixels. the mode option should be normal and the opacity level 100%. use the brush and paint a basic shape. step 17 add a new layer by clicking on the create a new layer icon. change the brush’s size to 50 pixels and start painting smaller clouds inside the large cloud you have painted earlier. step 18 add again a new layer (click the create new layer icon). as in the previous step, paint some even smaller clouds, on the outside of the larger cloud, with the brush size set to 30 pixels, lets say. step 19 add a new layer which you should name clouds merged. it will be the layer containing the merged copy of the three clouds layer created above. make the background layer invisible (click the eye icon in front of it). make sure the top layer (which should be clouds merged) is active and press the ctrl+shift+alt+e key combination to merge all visible layers on the layer clouds merged. step 20 the next step is to create a new layer. go to the menu and select edit > fill. select a value of 50% grey from the dialog window and click ok. by pressing the ctrl+g combination, clip this layer with the clouds merged layer. step 21 next set this layer’s blending mode to overlay. select the burn tool (which you will find in the tool bar). click the brush preset picker and select a regular round bush with a diameter of approximately 65 pixels. select a hardness value of 0%. step 22 you will want to add some contrast to the clouds. select layer 4 and paint over the clouds with the burn tool. step 23 now you want to add some shadows to your clouds. set a dark blue color (enter a 304971 value) to the foreground color. step 24 from the dialog window that will appear select gradient. but you have to be careful which gradient to chose: you will see a gradient whose color changes from blue to transparent. move the gradient by holding down the mouse button and position it so it will stretcdiagonally on your image, with the right bottom side of the cloud a bit dark. click ok in the gradient fill window. step 25 click ctrl+g to clip this layer with layer 4, which is underneath. this is how your layers palette should be looking at this point: look in the layers palette: you will notice a black layer linked to the gradient one. click it to activate it. with this layer activated, click the d key to set the foreground color to clack and the background color to white step 26 select the brush tool from the tool bar and choose a round bush (set its master diameter of 35 pixels, its hardness of 0% and an opacity level 05 20%). you can now start painting with black in order to mask the areas which you need to brighten. try different settings for the opacity level or the size of the brush until you are satisfied with the result. step 27 you may think that the transition between the shadows underneath the cloud and its bright areas isn’t very smooth. if that is the situation in your picture, you can use the blur tool to correct this. select the gaussian blur option from the filter > blur > gaussian blur menu. you may need to mask the gradient traces in the most bright areas of the cloud. step 28 the next step is to correct the tone of the cloud.create a new fill or adjustment layer (you will find this option at the bottom of the layers palette). chose solid color and choose a dark gray/bluish color (enter a value of 5c687d) in order to make your cloud look more realistic. clip this layer to the layer 4 which is undernea
